Marriage irregularities &c.
In Somerset a 1777 marriage ceremony was repeated after three days
because banns had been read on Good Friday instead of a Sunday, in the interval
the parties probably "lived in sin"; between 1828 and 1907 the prohibited
degrees in marriage were several times ignored, perhaps unwittingly. No such
lapses have been found in those with Dorset connections, although one male had
six children by an already married partner making her his wife after the
husband's death. There have been other births outside marriage, in both groups,
and these are covered in notes on the Waygood parents, where identified. A
child, Mabel Blanche, was baptised in 1889 at Pulham, parents William and Fanny
Weygood, although they appear on 1891 census, with four other children, in the
name Mitchell; the father, 'William John Waygood Mitchell, illegitimate son of
Susanna Mitchell, was born at Cerne Union House and baptised in 1859 at Pulham,
his apparent Waygood father not named.
